![]() Just six months later, the fields and hillsides are covered in spring green. “Unless are in peril, they are really just observers.” Let me know what you liked best.Lang’s own home burnt to the ground as he stayed behind to put out spot fires and monitor the animals who stayed surprisingly calm as the fire closed in. ![]() I would love to hear about your trip to either safari park. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. If you’re a teacher, or a parent looking to recommend a field trip option, I highly recommend something fun and education like the above aforementioned. Each year, Safari West has over 10,000 school children visiting for field trips. Your kids can still take advantage of the educational opportunities, even when school is in session. For instance, the San Diego park offers summer camp and educational programs like the Critter Connection, which is a presentation featuring natural history, conservation stories, and up-close animal encounters. This is actually exactly what my fiance and I did for our visit.īoth parks value education, especially for kids. You can go on a safari on Saturday and head over to the wine train for some wine tasting on Sunday. If you are looking for some adult time away from the kids, I definitely recommend going to Safari West because it is not too far from Napa Valley. For those who don’t know, the cheetah is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds between 112 and 120 km/h (70 and 75 mph), covering distances up to 460 m (1,500 ft), and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 103 km/h (64 mph) in three seconds, faster than most cars!Īlthough the San Diego Safari has the cheetah run, Safari West definitely has its advantages. However, one of my personal favorite moments of my San Diego trip was seeing the cheetah run. Safari West didn’t have gorillas and although, both had several species of birds, the San Diego Safari had a Frequent Flyers bird show.Ĭheetahs are on the endangered species list and both parks offer an opportunity for you to see a cheetah up-close and personal. I learned that gorillas really like popcorn. When we went to the San Diego Safari, we just happened to go on a day where the Gorilla Forest was set up for a gorilla birthday celebration. The San Diego Safari is located near the very popular San Diego Zoo, which also has a lot of different monkey species. However, as hinted above, both parks also have a large area you can walk around.Īt Safari West, we learned a lot about their different monkey species. At the San Diego Safari Park, we would have to pay quite a bit more for a tour guide for the walking portion of the park and the tram was packed full of many people, so it was harder to get individual questions answered.īoth parks have a main expedition area, where the tram or vehicle runs through, where you will see giraffes, rhinos, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, and so much more. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered any and all questions group members had while on the tour. For a vehicle tour, it costs $78.00 for adults but still $32.00 for kids.Īlthough Safari West seems a little more pricey for adults, my fiance, a small group of about six people, and myself had our own tour guide throughout but both the driving and walking portions of the park. Safari West doesn’t have as many options. The cheapest is the tram which is $42.00 for adults and $32.00 for children. For instance, the park offers caravan, jungle rope obstacle course, and zipline safari options. San Diego’s Safari Park offers several different safari adventure options, depending on your budget. I have been to both safaris and both are pretty comparable in the types of wildlife you will see on your trip, but I did notice a few distinctions between my two visits. The second, the San Diego Safari, is located in Southern California. The first, Safari West of Santa Rosa, is in Northern California. Luckily, California offers two affordable options to see African wildlife close to home. Henry Miller, an American writer and painter, once said, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” With the economy in a downturn, not many people can afford to travel halfway across the world to experience different cultures, habitats, and ways of life.

![]() As most of my library is AVI or DIVX this is ok. I have found that the server works best when set to not convert format, however, by doing this the Sony is only able to pick up AVI or DIVX video files. I have, however, encountered a few limitations, but i've generally worked around them. I've been happily using MC for all my media uses, including as a server for my Sony Blu Ray player, for a number of years now. I don't know if things have changed since then. "j river is a Media center AKA a media client and not a server that is how it can add that feature thats the difference" It sounds like they had not designed their basic data structures to allow user-defined sorting.Īnd then I got told off for requesting this, and being told that MC is not a server therefore that's why it allows you to customise your menus!!! Obviously if you have ideas for additional categories or enhancing the current ones then ideas are always welcome." ATM I'm going with a predefined set of categories, each representing a data drilling command(s). ![]() Not only it would need complicated UI, but also a lot of changes to the underlaying data request layer and services. "I hear you, but it's not an easy thing to implement at all. I put a request on the forum to enhance the browse menus, as the software was very much in its early stages of development, but unfortunately they found it too difficult to do at the time! but I found its browse menus limiting and no better than any other media server. I was initially looking for a NAS-installable server and was already fond of MC but started looking at serviio becuase it's available on a NAS. From my experience of serviio and its developers during its early stages, I think you will get better response from MC staff and user community, and also you get weekly releases of MC with bug fixes and new features, whereas with serviio the updates are not very regular. Other than that, I don't know much about servoio, but if you describe to us what you'd like to do and what you expect from a DLNA server then we might be able to point you to specific things that MC does instead of trying to second-guess what serviio does and why one might be better than the other!ħ. It will also perform 5 better then serviio I guess, as it has a TV interface and remote apps and means you don't have to use a primitive interface that might be built into a TV, or a generic remote DLNA app. Last time I looked at serviio, it had limited and pre-defined browse structures and limited tagging management, whereas MC is completely flexible and customisable in that regard. JriverMC will certainly do 3, 4, 5 and 6, and it does them extremely well. Points 1 and 2 are subjective and I don't know what hardware you've got. There may be other things, but those are the major things off the top of my head! whether it has its own browsing interface, e.g. whether it incorporates metadata tagging/scraping tools if you need it to do thatĥ. whether it will allow you to categorise your media as you wish and specify/customise your browse menusĤ. whether it will transcode files as necessary depending on your particular rendering devicesģ. whether it will run on the hardware you want it to run onĢ. If you are only looking for a DLNA server then the things I guess which will define whether one is any better than another for your own purposes are:ġ. As mentioned above, JRiver MC is a complete "media management and play" tool, Serviio is only a DLNA server which is a small part of what MC does. ![]() Later feminist theories remind us, rather, that gender is a social relationship, based upon the promotion of hierarchy, and one that is reiterated through interactions in everyday life. ![]() However, sometimes this notion of gender as a set of cultural practices has been reduced to role or identity, so that gender is treated as a preexisting characteristic or property of the individual. Second-wave feminism, for example, separated the concept of “sex” from “gender,” in order to show that “gender” refers to a set of social expectations that may be challenged ( Oakley, 1972 Unger, 1979). In part, these points relate to the ways in which gender is defined. This tends to individualize gender, to see it as a personal characteristic, and to see gender oppression merely as a form of personal behavior or values. While he does go on to point out that social, rather than biological, processes produce gender, it is largely at the level of attitudes that his suggestions for change are leveled. Thompson’s text, for example, describes gender as a “fundamental dimension of human experience, revealing an ever-present set of differences between men and women” ( Thompson, 2012: 55). Yet these, too, often rely upon limited accounts. Third, the question of how power works within social work institutions, and how this relates to gender, is likely to be a lot more complicated.ĭiscussions about challenging oppression and discrimination within social work theory and practice are some of the few occasions on which gender is openly acknowledged ( Dominelli, 2002a Mullaly, 2007 Thompson, 2012). ![]() First, the smaller number of men in the profession may actually hold more institutional power, and, second, a profession like social work is, as with many fields involving the care of others, devalued. This is an important argument since, to describe social work as “female-dominated” suggests that, merely because they are far greater in number, women hold more power. Yet, McPhail has argued that “social work is more correctly described as a female majority, male-dominated profession” ( McPhail, 2004b: 325), because, although there are many more women than men in the field, they do not necessarily dominate. It is frequently overlooked and, perhaps more importantly, where it is considered, gender is theorized in a number of rather limited ways.įor example, social work is often described as a female-dominated profession, but one in which men disproportionately occupy senior roles. Although a key feature of everyday life, within social work, gender has what sociologists sometimes call a “seen-but-unnoticed” quality. It is concerned, more precisely, with the conceptualization and usage of “gender” within social work theory, research, and practice. This article is a contribution to opening up the conversation on gender and social work. The slicer is easy to use and store, with convenient disassembly for quick clean-up.
